What are STEM Rays?

Our STEM Rays (Rising Advocates for Youth in STEM) are high school to college-age student mentors who are integral to the GEMS program. Participation gives them leadership, teaching, volunteering, and, for some, work experience. The STEM Rays give our younger GEMS girls someone to relate to, someone to look up to, and a strong example to follow. 


STEM Rays activities include:

Interested in Volunteering as a STEM Ray?

High school girls in northern Colorado, this one's for you. STEM Rays is a volunteer and leadership program where you mentor K-5 girls in STEM, help teach real lessons, and build skills that actually matter, including college prep, scholarships, and hands-on experience. STEM Rays (Rising Advocates for Youth in STEM) is a volunteer and leadership program for high school and college-age students. As a STEM Ray, you mentor K–5 students in STEM through the GEMS program, help teach real lessons, and develop skills in leadership, communication, and education.

The program is open to high school students in northern Colorado, as well as college-age students. No prior teaching experience is required — just enthusiasm and a passion for STEM!

STEM Rays support GEMS after-school enrichment sessions and field trips, co-teach or solo-teach at least one GEMS class per year, help with GEMS summer camps, and attend monthly Saturday meetups with CSU students. Each session involves roughly 3–4 hours of your time.

Yes! STEM Rays gain hands-on leadership and teaching experience, college prep support, and community service hours. There's also a $500 scholarship opportunity available after completing two semesters, plus free pizza at monthly meetups.

STEM Rays participate in GEMS sessions throughout the school year and attend monthly Saturday meetups alongside CSU students.
